Smith began by telling us that the Roomba, despite our guess to the contrary, was not an outgrowth of the industrial/military work for which the company was known. The development of the first robotic floor vacuum was, instead, a conscious move, if not a priority.

A couple of our engineers said we have an idea, and they went to Colin [Angle], our CEO, and told him, “I think we should make a robot that cleans your house. You know, that vacuums the floors.” So Colin gave them a very small sum of money, I think it was around twenty thousand dollars, told them they could use a couple of other engineers, and said, “Okay, let’s see what you can come up with.” Before long they had come back with some pretty interesting prototypes, and that really opened Colin’s eyes. And once he’d seen a few examples of the kind of thing they could make, he had the foresight to say, Yeah, there’s a market out there for this. Of course, it was really in keeping with his philosophy, that is, the whole reason he started iRobot, which was to build practical robots. In fact, our central message is “Real Robots for the Real World,” which is perfectly consistent with Colin’s mission, which evolved over time with the other founders, to bring robots out of science fiction and bring them into people’s homes. And it turned out that vacuuming floors was a great practical application of that mission.
